Gordon was born August 24, 1923 in Ft. Worth, Texas and passed away November 13, 2015 in his home in Longview, Texas. He was raised in Ft. Worth and lived there until age 16, when he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps following the outbreak of World War II. After being honorably discharged from active duty in January 1946, Gordon worked for General Dynamics as a foreman and Panther Chemicals as a salesman. During his years at Panther in the late 1950s, he broke company sales records and earned coveted awards and accolades, including Rookie of the Year in 1956, and the Distinguished Salesman award. Gordon opened Mingo Sales and Service in Longview in the early 1970s.
Gordon held a handful of causes and organizations very close to his heart, and he worked tirelessly in service of those groups and their charitable efforts. As a lifetime member of the Rotary Club, he maintained perfect attendance for more than 50 years. He was also a lifetime member of the Marine Corps League, and showed unwavering loyalty to his friends and fellow servicemen in the League. He was especially dedicated to their annual Toys for Tots charity drive, and worked diligently each year to ensure every child in need had presents to open on Christmas. In 2013, he received the Marine Corps Leagues award for Marine of the Year.
As a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, he was part of the Men of Trinity, a group that organized fundraising activities for the church, including the annual Fish Fry fundraiser, a favorite event of Gordons. He was also active with the Trinity School of Texas and initiated a recycling program at the school in the late 1980s/early 90s.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 39 years, Patricia T. Hargett; son, Larry G. Hargett, wife, Kathy, and daughter, Holly; son, Theodore C. Hargett; step daughter, Sue H. Reed and her husband, Dr. Larry Huffman; grandchildren, Blake Hardin and wife, Samantha, Lindsey Hardin, Patricia Reed, Perry Thomas Reed II and his wife, Jennifer; Dr. Huffmans children, Larry Jr., Chris, Matt, and Heather Huffman; and great-grandchildren, Cheyenne, Paige, Destiny, Madison, and Peyton Nanny, and Laura and Jayden Anthony.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Emma Stevona; father, Henry Gordon Hargett; sister, Mary Stevona Hargett Compton; and step son, Robert Harold Hardin.
Funeral services were held Friday, November 20, 2 p.m., at Rader Funeral Home in Longview, followed by a graveside service at Rosewood Cemetery. Visitation was Thursday, November 19, from 5-7 p.m., at the funeral home.
