HALLSVILLE - Memorial services for Gunnery Sqt. Jessie David Herndon will be 12:45 p.m. Sunday, May 25, 2014 at the Crisman School, 2455 Eastman Rd., Longview.
Dave's father, John David Herndon, died with Dave was about 2 years old and he was raised by his grandpa, Jessie Jacks, while his mother worked in a sewing room to support the family. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1951. He was a machine gunner in Korea and served for 20 years, retiring in 1971.
After retirement, he attended Kilgore College, majoring in auto mechanics. He was a farmer at heart and enjoyed sharing what he grew. He was a great story teller and his grandchildren loved to hear him tell stories about his life.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Jessie Andrew Jacks; mother, Velma Jacks; sisters, Irene Franklin and Johnnie Mae Garret; and brother, Riley E. Ross.
He is surviced by his wife, Jessie Frobese Herndon; daughter, Debby Neal and husband, Wesley Don; granddaughters, Cassidy Neal, Chambrine Downs and Roy and Christena Neal; great-grandchildren, Shelby Neal, Jessica Neal, Emma Neal, Wesley Neal, Jessie David Neal and Harmony Lipinski; and cousins, nieces and nephews.
